U.V. Filters

How they work

A UV (ultraviolet) water filter uses ultraviolet light to disinfect water by inactivating harmful microorganisms. Here's a detailed breakdown of how it works:

  1. UV Lamp: The core component of the system is a UV lamp, which emits UV-C light. This type of light has a wavelength of 254 nanometers, which is effective at disrupting the DNA of microorganisms.
  2. Quartz Sleeve: The UV lamp is housed in a quartz sleeve, which protects the lamp from water and ensures that the UV light can penetrate the water effectively.
  3. UV Chamber: Water flows through a chamber that contains the UV lamp. As the water passes through, it is exposed to the UV light.
  4. DNA Disruption: The UV-C light penetrates the cells of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. It damages their DNA, rendering them unable to reproduce or cause infection. This process is known as inactivation.
  5. Chemical-Free: UV water filtration is a chemical-free process. It does not add any substances to the water, making it a safe and environmentally friendly method of disinfection.

What a UV Water Filter Removes

UV water filters are effective at inactivating a wide range of microorganisms, including:

  • Bacteria: Such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Streptococcus.
  • Viruses: Including Hepatitis, Norovirus, and Rotavirus.
  • Protozoa: Such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

However, it's important to note that UV filters do not remove non-biological contaminants like heavy metals, chemicals, or sediments. They are often used in conjunction with other filtration methods to ensure comprehensive water purification.
