DIY: Turning off water supply

How to turn off your water in case of emergency:

  1. Locate the main shut-off valve: This valve is usually found where the water line enters your home, often on the side of the home, connected to a hose bibb, in some cases it’ll be in a garage or utility closet.
  2. Turn off the valve: Turn the valve clockwise (to the right) to shut off the water supply. Gate valves (resemble a wheel) will have to be turned multiple times. Ball valves (Straight handle) are only a ¼ turn. If the handle is stuck, do not force it.
  3. Valve handle stuck: Locate your city meter shut off in the ground and use a meter key to shut off (emergencies only, city municipalities insist they are the only ones to shut off meters)
  4. Drain the system: Open faucets to let any remaining water in the pipes drain out.
