DIY: Sewer Smells

Ridding sewer smells from sinks, tub and shower drains:

  1. Check for dry traps: Pour water into all the drains in your house. If a drain hasn't been used in a while, the water in the trap (the U or P shaped pipe) can evaporate, letting sewer gas come up.
  2. Clean the drains: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda followed by 1 cup of vinegar down each drain. After it stops fizzing, flush with hot water.
  3. Inspect for leaks: Look under sinks and around pipes for any signs of leaks. If you find any, you might need to tighten connections or replace parts.
