- Turn off the power: Unplug the garbage disposal or turn off the circuit breaker to make sure it doesn't turn on while you're working.
- Look inside: Use a flashlight to check if something is stuck inside, like food or a utensil.
- Turn the blades: At the bottom of the disposal, there's a hole for an Allen wrench. Turn the wrench back and forth to move the blades and free any stuck items.
- Remove stuck items: If you see something stuck, use tongs or pliers to pull it out. Never use your hands.
- Reset the disposal: Press the small red button on the bottom of the disposal to reset it.
- Test it: Plug it back in or turn the circuit breaker back on. Run cold water and turn on the disposal to see if it's working.
If the disposal is still jammed:
- Press the reset button: Try pressing the red reset button again.
- Fill the sink: Put the sink stopper in and fill the sink halfway with water.
- Turn the blades again: Use the Allen wrench to turn the blades back and forth.
- Drain the water: Remove the sink stopper to let the water and debris drain.
- Turn on the disposal: While the water is draining, turn on the disposal to clear any small debris.
- Check for big items: If you hear grinding or knocking, unplug the disposal and use a flashlight and pliers to remove any large items.
